How to dress for an exploration of the Arctic Circle?

There is a golden rule among explorers of the extreme cold, known as the 3-layer rule:

  • The first layer: a nylon or merino clothing to keep the body dry.
  • The second layer: a wool garment like a fleece to retain heat.
  • The third layer: a protective garment like a ventilated windbreaker to shield from the wind while also protecting from the snow.

⚠️ Please avoid wearing cotton in your clothing, except for your underwear. Cotton absorbs moisture, which is dangerous in extreme cold conditions.

First layer

As a first layer, warm merino wool underwear is recommended. They fit snugly against the body and keep it dry.

Second layer

On top of this first layer, it's important to keep the heat trapped close to your body. That's why we recommend either a compact down jacket or a fleece that rises up to the neck!

Third layer

And finally, for the third and last layer that should protect you from the wind and snow, a Gore-Tex jacket would be preferable, or a ski jacket would be ideal.

Thick trousers

As for trousers, a ski or snowboard pants will be sufficient as it allows for freedom of movement. An added bonus would be if it has small gaiters attached.

A lightweight balaclava

It is also important to protect your face from the cold. Therefore, it is essential to have a lightweight balaclava that can fit comfortably under a helmet.

Scarf, ski mask

A neck gaiter or scarf will be very useful, even essential, to fully protect yourself from the cold. A ski mask is also a plus for your comfort while riding and to ensure clear vision on your snowmobile.

A pair of gloves

A good pair of gloves is extremely important. For passengers, a pair of mittens is recommended as they provide better insulation than regular gloves. Despite the heated handles of the snowmobile, it's not enough. A quality pair of gloves will ensure the necessary comfort during our road trips.
